What We Do Outside the Church Walls

We love to worship, to study, to enjoy fellowship together. But we use all of that to "feed" us to we can reach out to others outside our church walls and often outside of our community in north Shelby County.

Here's just a sample of some of the things we do -- and what you can do with us, even if you don't choose to become a member of our church.

Piper Place: Once a month and on several special occasions throughout the year, we take a meal to the people at Piper Place, an outreach and support effort designed to help people with mental illness move back successfully into society and achieve as much independence as possible. The meal is during the day, so we gather our contributions the night before at the church building and one person carries them to Piper Place the next day.

Family Court: The third Friday of every month, starting at 6:15 p.m., will find us at the detention center that serves juveniles in Jefferson County, just off Second Court North near downtown Birmingham. We usually play a round of "Pictionar" or another game to get to know these young people, and then we ask for their prayer requests. People who don't actually go to Family Court participate by praying for these young people throughout the next month.

Health Talents International:  This medical mission organization provides medical services and Christian outreach to people in Central America, especially Guatemala.   HTI began here in the 1970s, but is now supported by congregations all over the world..

Cahaba Valley Health Care: This health-care outreach, especially to Spanish-speaking people in the Greater Birmingham area.  CVHC began at Cahaba Valley Church.

Greater Birmingham Ministries: We do much of our benevolence work through GBM, an ecumenical, community-based organization supported by faith groups from all across the Greater Birmingham area. Their focus is on providing emergency services, neighborhood revitalization and social justice initiatives for low-income people in our area, so we know they will use our contributions wisely.
